Untouched Gem – Small Nature Reserve in the City

Rietfontein Nature Reserve

From The Lookout Point You Can See Forever And Ever

Rietfontein Nature Reserve is about 24km north of Johannesburg CBD in the small suburb of Paulshof. This 25 hectare indigenous green space with its quartzite koppie evokes in all visitors a feeling of being in the country.

Home to duiker, klipspringer, rock koppies and a myriad of birds!

Rietfontein has an educational centre and an outdoor classroom.

One can book for guided walks on a 2km walking trail with a gentle climb to the lookout point and a meander around the perimeter of the reserve and learn more about this untouched gem within our city.

Birds and Animals In The Reserve
On the trail one might come across the following birds and animals: Spotted Eagle Owl, Bulbul, Olive Thrush, Sacred Ibis, Speckled Pigeon, Collared Barbet, Glossy Starling, Grey Go Away Bird, Hadeda, Sparrow, Hedgehog, Mongoose, Duiker, Blesbok. Klipspringer, Spotted Genet.

Participants were treated to a delicious cheese and wine tasting kindly sponsored by Lanzerac, De Krans and Century 21 Property, Paulshof Estate Agents.

The Friends of Rietfontein now have more members and are ecstatic that each experience in the reserve grows awareness to protect and preserve this special indigenous green lung in our city.
